Last Bloom

By Daniela Nii
Easy

If you always wanted to try your hand on some lace but didn’t want to commit to lace weight yarn, hours of concentrated work and a large scale project, then this might be just what the doctor prescribed: a small, airy headscarf that has only 2 repeating pattern rows and can be finished in a lazy weekend. What a cute way to keep the hair out of the eyes when the winds pick up on the upcoming fall days.

Pattern Notes

The triangle is worked from the tip up to the long edge by increasing in regular intervals at both sides.

Selvage sts: At the beginning of a row – k selvage st; at the end of a row – slip selvage st pwise wyif.

Eyelet edge: The eyelet edge along the triangle sides is created by working the following st combination: at the right edge – selvage st, k1, yo; at the left edge – yo, k1, selvage st.

Double Raised Increase (DRI): Make 3 sts out of 1 st. Insert right hand needle from back to front into st below the next one to be knit and pick up the right leg of that st. Knit it. Knit next stitch on left hand needle. Insert right hand needle from front to back into st below the just knit st and pick up the left leg of that st. Knit it = 3 sts.

SKP: Slip 1 st, k1, psso.

Crochet chain cast on (provisional cast on): Work a crochet foundation chain. Pick up and knit one st in every loop at back of crochet chain (not through chain loops).

UnknownContinue in this pattern: every time you have 4 sts between the yo of the eyelet edge and the stitch marker, add another repeat of the lace pattern at each end and reset the placement of the stitch markers.

Also, use the WS row as a check to make sure you’ve made all the yo’s on the RS row: between the markers, you should be purling 1 st, 1 yo, 1 st, 1 yo, etc. Otherwise backtrack and correct your error before you’ve gone too far.

When triangle measures approximately 11 inches in height (tip to long edge), end with a RS row so that at the beginning of the row, you have 4 sts before the marker and at the end of the row, you have 4 sts after the marker (including the selvage st). Break yarn.

Ties

Take scrap yarn and make 2 crochet foundation chains of 28 sts each. Break yarn.
Take one foundation chain, your empty needle and with MC, make 25 sts using the crochet chain cast on. The 25 sts should be on your right hand needle now. Then pick up your left needle with the scarf sts on it and with WS facing, continue to purl across scarf sts. Then take 2nd foundation chain and with right hand needle, continue and make 25 sts using crochet chain cast on: 25 sts – scarf sts – 25 sts, all on the same needle.

Tie row 1 (RS): Selvage st, *k1, yo, slip 1 st, k2tog, psso, yo; repeat from * across, k1, selvage st.
Tie row 2 (WS):  Purl across.
Tie row 3: Selvage st, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, *slip 1 st, k2tog, psso, yo, k1, yo; repeat from * across, SKP, selvage st.
Tie row 4: Purl across.
Repeat rows 1-4 until tie measures about 1”, ending with a WS row.
Next 2 rows: Knit all.
UnknownNext row: Bind of all sts in knit.

To finish bottom edge of tie, unravel provisional cast on and pick up the sts onto your needle so that you can continue with a RS row.
Next row (RS): Knit all.
Next row (WS): Bind off all sts in purl.
Repeat for second side.

Crochet Flower (make 3)

With crochet hook and MC, ch 6 and join with slip st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, changing to CC in last sc, (yo and pull through last 2 loops with new color): 6 sc.
Break MC.
Rnd 2: With CC, * sc in next sc, ch 12, sc in same sc, ch 12; repeat from * around, sl st to join petal: 11 “petals”.

Break yarn.
Weave in CC ends. Use MC ends to attach the flower to the head scarf.

Optional: To keep your flower petals from curling up, you might want to pin the flowers as though blocking and apply some fabric stiffener (follow directions on bottle) to the petals and let dry. Or you can use a few stitches to sew down the petals.

FINISHING

Weave in all ends.
