I always associate spring with beginning of fun playing outside. My daughters love swings and rides and I made these overalls with outdoor play in mind – a comfy versatile outfit for my daughters to truly enjoy the entire experience! The little long legged chick and cooky stripes make people smile. I am sure that after this endless snowy winter, everyone needs to cheer up!

Knit Picks Shine Worsted [60% Pima Cotton, 40% Modal® natural beech wood fiber; 75yards/68 meters per 1.75 ounce/50 gram skein];

Grass (MC); 5[5, 6, 6, 6] skeins
Terra Cotta (CC1); 2 skeins for all sizes
Crème Brulee (CC2), 1 skein for all sizes

Pattern Notes

Cheer Up overalls are worked in rounds from the waist down, then the upper front and upper back are worked flat and finished separately. The overalls are completely seamless.

Seed Stitch

Rnd 1: * K1, p1; repeat from * around.
Rnd 2: * P1, k1; repeat from * around.
Repeat Rnds 1 and 2.

Skills Required

Knitting in rounds on circular needles, increase, decrease, i-cord, buttonholes, provisional cast-on.


INSTRUCTIONS

Using 24 inch circular needle and waste yarn, provisionally cast on 112[116, 122, 126, 132] sts. Place marker, being careful not to twist, join to begin working in the round. Beginning of the round will be the center of the front. With MC, work in St st for 1.5[2, 2.5, 3, 3.5] inches.

Work one round more, placing a stitch marker after 55[57, 60, 62, 65] stitches.

Cheer UpStart decreasing for crotch.
Rnd 1: K1, m1, knit to the marker, m1, slip marker, k2, m1, k to last stitch, m1, k1: 116[120, 126, 130, 136] sts.
Rnds 2-4: Knit around.
Rnds 5-8: Repeat Rnds 1-4: 120[124, 130, 134, 140] sts.
Rnd 9: Repeat Rnd 1: 124[128, 134, 138, 144] sts.
Rnd 10: Knit around.
Rnds 11 and 12: Repeat Rnds 1 and 2: 128[132, 138, 142, 148] sts.
Rnds 13-18: Repeat Rnd 1, 6 times: 152[156, 162, 166, 172] sts.

Decreasing for crotch is finished. Separate for legs.

LEFT LEG

Switch to 16 inch circular needle.

Next Rnd: Knit to the marker, remove marker, k1, cast on 6[6, 7, 9, 10] sts: 82[84, 88, 92, 96] sts. Slip remaining unworked 76[78, 81, 83, 86] sts to strand of waste yarn for Right Leg. Place marker, join to begin working in the round.

Work in St st for 0.5[1, 1.5, 2, 2.5] inches.
With CC2 work 2 rnds.
With CC1 work 6 rnds.
With CC2 work 2 rnds.
With MC work 4 rnds.
With CC2 work 2 rnds.

RIGHT LEG

Slip 76[78, 81, 83, 86] sts for Right Leg onto the 16 inch circular needle. You have a gap between the beginning and the end of the rnd that was created by 6[6, 7, 9, 10] cast on sts. Beginning of the round is right before this gap. Starting at beginning of the round, pick up and knit 6[6, 7, 9, 10] sts on the edge of the cast on sts. Knit around: 82[84, 88, 92, 96] sts.

Work in St st for .75[.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5] inches.
Next Rnd: With CC1 knit around.
Next Rnd: With MC knit around.
Repeat last 2 rnds, 3[3, 4, 4, 4] times more.
Next Rnd: With CC1 knit around.
With MC work in St st for for .5[.5, 1, 1.5, 2] inches.
Next Rnd: With CC2 knit around.
Next Rnd: With MC knit around.
Repeat last 2 rnds 3[3, 4, 4, 4] times more.

With MC work in St st for 5[.75, .75, 1, 1.25] inch. Carefully measure the leg length – the bottom green stripes on both legs should end on the same spot.

With CC1 work in Seed St for 0.5[1, 1, 1, 1] inch.
With MC work in St st for 1.25 inches.
Bind off all sts.

UPPER FRONT

Return to the provisional cast on. Remove the waste yarn. Beginning 28[29, 30, 31, 33] sts to right of center front, put 56[58, 60, 62, 66] front stitches on a needle. Put the remaining 56[58, 62, 64, 66] sts on a waste yarn and leave aside for Upper Back. Start working on the front.

Row 1 (RS): [K1, p1] 4 times, k40[42, 44, 46, 50], [p1, k1] 4 times.
Row 2: [K1, p1] 4 times, p40[42, 44, 46, 50], [p1, k1] 4 times.
Rows 3 and 4: Repeat Rows 1 and 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row 1.
Row 6 (place markers): [K1, p1] 4 times, pm, p40[42, 44, 46, 50], pm, [p1, k1] 4 times.
Row 7: (buttonholes and decreases):  k1, p1, k1, bind off next 2 sts in pattern, k1, p1; k2tog, knit to 2 sts before marker, ssk, slip marker, p1, k1, p1, bind off next 2 sts in pattern, k1, p1.
Row 8: K1, p1, k1, cast on 2 sts, p1, k1, p1, purl to next marker, p1, k1, p1, cast on 2 sts, k1, p1, k1: 54[56, 58, 60, 64] sts.

Row 15 (decrease row): Repeat Row 11: n/a[n/a, 54, 56, 60] sts.
Row 16: Repeat row 10.

Rows 19 (buttonholes and decreases) and 20: Repeat rows 7 and 8: 46[48, 52, 54, 58] sts.
Rows 21 and 22: Repeat rows 9 and 10.
Row 23 (decrease row): Repeat Row 11: 44[46, 50, 52, 56] sts.
Maintaining pattern, continue to decrease one st inside Seed st border at each edge every fourth row, 6[7, 8, 9, 10] times more: 32[32, 34, 34, 36] sts.

Next Row: * K1, p1; repeat from * across.
Continue in seed stitch for 1 inch, ending with a WS row.

Bind off all sts in pattern.

UPPER BACK

Slip 56[58, 62, 64, 66] unworked Upper Back sts to needle.

Row 1 (RS): Working behind Upper Front, pick up and knit 8 sts along the inside bottom edge of the right seed stitch border, k56[58, 62, 64, 66], pick up and knit 8 stitches along the inside bottom of the left seed stitch border: 72[74, 78, 80, 82] sts.
Row 2 (WS) (place markers): [K1, p1] 4 times, pm, purl across to last 8 sts, pm, [p1, k1] 4 times.
Row 3: [K1, p1] 4 times, knit to marker, [p1, k1] 4 times.

Rows 4 and 5: Repeat Rows 2 and 3: 66[68, 72, 74, 76] sts.
Row 6: Repeat Row 2.
Row 7: Bind off 13[14, 16, 17, 18] sts, work in pattern to marker, ssk, knit to 2 sts before next marker, k2tog, k1[0, 1, 0, 0], [p1, k1] 8[9, 9, 10, 10] times: 51[52, 54, 55, 56] sts.

Short Row 1: Work in pattern to marker, k10, w&t.
Short Row 2: P10, w&t.

Short Row 5: k7, knitting wraps with the st they wrap, work in pattern across.

Short rows are finished.
Next 3 Rows: Knit across, knitting the wraps with the st they wrap on the first row.

STRAPS

Switch to CC1 and 2 dpns. Start the right strap.
Row 1 (RS): K9. Put the remaining 9 sts on waste yarn.
Row 2: Knit across.
Row 3: K1, [p1, k1] across.

Repeat Row 3 until the strap measures 4[5.5, 7, 8.5, 10] inches, ending with a WS row.

Make a buttonhole.
Row 1: K1, p1, k1, bind off next 3 sts in pattern, p1, k1.
Row 2: K1, p1, k1, cast on 3 sts, k1, p1, k1.

Work in Seed st for 2 rows.

Start decreasing.
Next Row: K2tog, k1, [p1, k1] across: 8 sts.
Repeat this row until you have 5 sts remain.
Bind off all sts in pattern.

Slip left strap sts onto dpn and work same as right strap.

Diamond

CHICK

BODY

With CC2 and two dpns, cast on 10[10, 12, 12, 12] sts.
Row 1: Knit across.
Row 2: Purl across.

Start increasing.
Row 3: K2, m1, knit across to last 2 sts, m1, k2: 12[12, 14, 14, 14] sts.
Row 4: Purl across.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4, twice: 16[16, 18, 18, 18] sts.
Work in St st for 1[1, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5] inches, ending with a WS row.

Start decreasing.
Next Row: K2, ssk, knit across to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2: 14[14, 16, 16, 16] sts.
Next Row: Purl across.
Repeat last 2 rows, twice: 10[10, 12, 12, 12] sts.
Bind off all sts.
With CC2 embroider the beak. Sew on eyes.

WINGS (make 2)

With CC2 and 2 dpns cast on 3 sts. Work 3 st i-cord for 4.5[4.5, 5, 5, 5] inches. K3tog and pull yarn through last st. Fold wings in half and sew to the wrong side of body.

LEGS (make 2)

With CC2 and 2 dpns cast on 3 sts. Work 3 st i-cord for 5[5, 5.5, 5.5, 5.5] inches. K3tog and pull yarn through last st. Tie knots on the bottom ends. Sew the legs on the wrong side of body.

FINISHING

Weave in the ends.

Using sewing thread and sewing needle, sew two 78 inch shell buttons to the top front corners for shoulder closures.

Using sewing thread and sewing needle, sew fou 58 inch shell buttons to the side borders (two on each side) for side closures.

Sew the chick to the Upper Front.

Block overalls.
