Just-spring

Intermediate
By Sharon Fuller

I designed these socks in response to e.e. cummings’ classic evocation of spring. The parasols cascade beads of water that undulate against a lush green background. The instep is dotted with flowers. A frilly cuff adds a thoroughly frivolous finishing touch. While these toe-up socks are designed for little girls, the youth size can be lengthened to fit teens or adult women.

Size

Toddler (3-4 years) [Youth (8-9 years)]
To fit U.S. child's shoe size 9 [youth 3]
Size shown: Toddler

Finished Measurements

Foot circumference: 6[8] inches unstretched
Foot length: 6[838] inches or desired length

Materials

Spud & Chloe Fine [80% merino wool, 20% silk; 248 yards/227 meters per 2.3 ounce/65 gram skein];
           7804 Cricket; 1 [2] skein(s).

Recommended needle sizes

US #1.5 / 2.5mm 32 to 47-inch circular needle (or five dpns).

Notions

Stitch markers - 4
108 [204] size 8/0 Japanese glass seed beads; color: silver matte (16 beads for each of 4[9] parasols, and 44[60] beads for the cuff). Japanese seed beads are smoother and more consistent than Czech beads, which may have irregularities and rough edges. Since you will be pushing beads along your working yarn, Japanese beads are recommended.
Beading needle (or sewing needle and thread)
Tapestry needle

Gauge

After blocking:
30 sts and 40 rows = 4 inches in St st
28 sts and 42 rows = 4 inches in parasol pattern (unstretched)

SKP (left-leaning single decrease)
Slip next stitch to right needle as if to knit. Knit the following stitch, pass slipped stitch back over stitch just knit. (I prefer this decrease to the ssk decrease because I find it looks neater and lies flatter. Feel free to use ssk if it gives you better results.)

S2KP (centered double decrease)
Slip next 2 stitches to right needle as if to knit together. Knit the following stitch. Pass slipped stitches back over stitch just knit.

Stringing Beads

When you are ready to start knitting with beads, break the yarn and string the beads on your working yarn using a beading needle. If you do not have a beading needle, thread a sewing needle with a loop of thread, tie the ends of the thread to the yarn tail, and pick up the beads using the sewing needle. As you string the beads, discard any malformed ones.

It's a good idea to string a dozen or so extra beads as insurance against counting or sorting errors. If you find any misshapen beads while you are knitting, you can break them off the yarn using needle-nose pliers.

As you work with the beaded yarn, make sure the beads are not hanging in the air and putting extra tension on the yarn. As you push the beads down the yarn, push them in batches -- there are too many to push all at once. For the Youth size, you may prefer to string 144 beads (plus a few extra) at the beginning, then break the yarn and add the rest of the beads after finishing the cuff.

BYO (beaded yarnover)
Place bead on yarnover. On next round, place the right needle ABOVE the bead when knitting into the yarnover.

Skills Required

Knitting in the round, lace, turning a heel, beading

INSTRUCTIONS

Toe

Using Judy's Magic Cast-On, cast on 6 sts (3 sts on each needle).

Rnd 1: Knit around with working yarn and tail held together.

Rnd 2: Knit around, knitting each st with working yarn, then knit same st again with tail, and placing markers after stitches 2, 5, 8 and 11: 12 sts.

Rnds 3-6: With working yarn, knit around, knitting into front and back of the stitch after each marker: 28 sts

Rnd 7: Knit around.
Repeat Rnds 6 and 7 until you have 44[60] stitches on the needles. You will have completed 15[23] rounds, and the work will measure approximately 112[214] inches in length.

Foot

Arrange stitches so that there are 21[29] instep stitches and 23[31] sole stitches.

Remove markers and place one marker at beginning of round. (If desired, you can move the beginning of round so as to center the increase lines.)

On each round, work tulip pattern across instep and knit across sole.

Work foot to 2[214] inches less than desired length, a total of approximately 4[618] inches including the toe.

Heel

Just SpringBottom of Heel

Starting with a WS row, work back and forth on 23[31] sole stitches in heel stitch as follows.

Row 1 (WS): Purl across.
Row 2 (RS): Sl 1 purlwise, * k1, sl 1 purlwise; repeat from * to end.

Work these 2 rows a total of 12[15] times. Heel flap measures approx 134[2] inches long.

Heel Turn

Starting with a WS row, work back and forth on heel stitches as follows.

Row 1 (WS): Purl across.
Row 2 (RS): Sl 1 purlwise, k13[17], skp, k1, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1 purlwise, p6, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1 purlwise, knit to first stitch before gap, skp across gap, k1, turn.
Row 5: Sl 1 purlwise, purl to first stitch before gap, p2tog across gap, p1, turn

Repeat Rows 4-5 until 15[19] stitches remain.

Pick Up Stitches

Divide the stitches so that one batch includes the back of the heel and one side of the sock, and the other batch includes the instep and the other side of the sock.

Heel and Side: Sl 1 purlwise, k14[18], pick up and knit 12[15] sts, pick up and knit two corner sts together, pm;

Instep and Side: Work 21[29] sts in Tulip patt as established, pm, pick up and knit 2 corner sts together, pick up and knit 12 [15] sts

You now have 62[80] sts on the needles.

Gusset

Just SpringRnd 1 - Heel and Side: Knit to last 2 sts before marker, k2tog;

Instep and Side: Work Tulip patt as established, slip marker, skp, knit to end of round: 60[78] sts.

Rnd 2 - Heel and Side: Knit across;

Instep and Side: Work Tulip patt as established, slip marker, knit to end of round

Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until 44[60] stitches remain, working as many full flowers as will fit in the gusset, then work in St st across the instep.

Leg

Toddler Setup

Knit 19 sts from Heel/Side. Remove marker. Shift last 2 sts to Instep/Side. Knit across Instep/Side. Shift last 5 stitches to Heel/Side. Remove marker. Knit across Heel/Side. This will be your new beginning of round.

Rnd 1 Instep: Yo, s2kp, yo, knit to end;

Heel: Yo, s2kp, yo, knit to end

Rnd 2 Instep: Knit across;

Heel: Knit across

Work Rnds 1 and 2 a total of five times, then work Rnd 1 one more time.

Youth Setup

Knit 8 sts from Heel. This will be your new beginning of round. Remove markers. (If using DPNs, divide stitches evenly over three needles.)
Rnd 1: [Yo, sk2p, yo, k17] 3 times.
Rnd 2: Knit around.
Work Rnds 1 and 2 a total of six times, ending with Rnd 1.

String Beads

Break yarn. String 108 [204] beads, plus a few extra (see Pattern Notes for detailed instructions).

Leg Body

Toddler Size Only

Attach beaded yarn and knit across instep sts and 11 heel sts. Rearrange stitches so start of round is here and stitches are divided evenly.

Youth Size Only

Attach beaded yarn and knit 12 sts. Rearrange stitches so start of round is here.
Both Sizes

Begin parasol pattern at Stitch 1 of Rnd 1. Work Parasol pattern for 2[3] repeats. Leg is 2[3] parasols in circumference.

Cuff

Knit one round after completing last repeat of Parasol pattern.

Twisted Rib: * K1tbl, p1; repeat from * around.
Work in Twisted Rib for 2 inches (about 25 rounds).

Ruffle

Rnd 1: * K1tbl, place bead between sts, p1, k1tbl, p1; repeat from * around.
Rnd 2: * K1tbl, yo, p1, k1tbl, p1; repeat from * around.
Rnd 3: * K1tbl, p2, k1tbl, place bead between sts, p1; repeat from * around.
Rnd 4: * K1tbl, p2, k1tbl, yo, p1; repeat from * around.

If you prefer, you can work a shorter cuff, and leave the ruffle standing up, rather than turned down.

Finish with a picot bind off, placing one bead at the tip of each picot bump as it is worked as follows:

Bind Off

Finish with a picot bindoff * Insert right needle from front to back between the first 2 sts on left needle, wrap and bring through. Transfer new st to left needle and knit this st, pulling bead through st and seating on back leg. Bind off 4 next sts. Return st from right needle to left needle. Repeat from * until all sts have been bound off.

Second Sock

Work same as first sock. If you like, you can mirror the feet on the second sock by eliminating the k2tog on Rnds 3, 7, 13 and 17 of the Tulip pattern, and adding an skp after the yo instead.

FINISHING

Weave in ends and block if desired.
