Sweet Panda

Intermediate
By Soto Softies

This sweet panda is a quick and easy project that is sure to be loved by the wee ones in your life. It's a great size for cuddling. With embroidered details and no buttons at the joints, it is also safe for all ages.

Materials

tracing paper
approx. 1 yard of black felt
1/2 yard of white felt
fat quarter of print fabric
ribbon or bias tape
doll/toy-making needles
embroidery floss
choice of stuffing (polyfil, wool, cotton, eco-fil)
fabric pen (the kind that fades away)

The panda will have felt and embroidered details. It will be jointed (but not button-jointed for safety).

  1. Trace the pattern pieces onto tracing paper. Cut, pin to felt and fabric, and cut the number of pieces as specified on each pattern piece. You should have:
1 white felt center panel for the head
2 white felt side panels for the head
1 white felt center panel for the body
2 white felt side panels for the body
4 black felt pieces for the arms
4 black felt pieces for the legs
2 fabric pieces for the feet
2 fabric pieces for the ears
2 black felt pieces for the ears
2 black felt pieces for the eyes
  1. For the head center panel, the dotted line indicates that you will fold the fabric and align the fold to the dotted line when cutting that piece so that you get one large piece.

  2. Cut your pieces.

  3. Sew the legs and arms first. Pin and sew, leaving about a 1 1/2 inch slot open at the upper back of each leg and arm. When sewing the legs, make sure to leave the bottoms of the feet open.

  4. Sew the foot bottoms on one side at a time.

  5. The head and body seem a little tricky. Sew the center panel onto one side panel.

    Repeat with the other side.

  6. For the body, once you have sewn the sides and the center panel, sew the center back seam.

  7. Trim before inverting your pieces.

  8. Invert and stuff.

  9. Seam the openings at the back of the arms and legs using an invisible stitch.

  10. Stitch around the opening of the head and draw your thread tightly - not too tightly or it will break.

Knot and cut. Repeat for the body.

  11. Pin the head to the body and stitch around it using an invisible stitch. Stitch around it twice to ensure it is secure.

  12. Embroider the eyes and sew onto the head.

  13. Attach the ears to the head.

  14. Draw the nose and mouth onto the head using disappearing fabric marker.

    Embroider details using floss.

  15. Attach the legs to the body with the black floss. Start at one side of body, and draw needle through to the leg on opposite side.

Reinsert needle and draw through the leg on the other side. Repeat until both legs are firmly attached. Try to sew in an X in the same spot. Draw needle through one last time. Pull through the body and loop around the inside of the leg to secure.

  16. Do the same with the arms.

  17. Tie a ribbon or bias tape around the neck, and your panda is ready to be some child’s cuddly best friend.

Soto Softies was started in early 2007 when an eternal daydreamer finally got behind a sewing machine and started making the cast of characters for the movie going on in her head. The creative force behind Soto Softies is Maritza Soto, a former freelance illustrator who now prefers to create these bright, colorful plush characters chock full of personality, combining hand-stitching and machine sewing, working mainly with wool felt and cotton fabrics. Inspired by vintage toy designs and nuigurumi, the Japanese art of making soft toys, Maritza started sewing in the summer of 2006. She has not looked back. She loves to play with color and form and is growing and developing her craft every day. Her whimsical softies are fun for children and adults alike.
